How does counter picking work in Overwatch?

Every hero has matchups they win and matchups they lose. Counter picking means answering an enemy hero with one that beats them: shutting down their key ability, out-ranging them, or out-brawling them. Pick a hero below to see their full ranked counter list and how to play the matchup.

How does Counterwatch rank Overwatch counters?

By duel outcomes, not match win rate. From community kill feeds we measure who wins the direct kill trades in each matchup and whose side dies more while both heroes are on the field, then strip out each hero's general strength so only the matchup remains. Win rate is a misleading counter signal because players usually counter-swap when they are already losing.

What is the hardest counter in Overwatch right now?

Why don't the counter ratings use win rates?

Because the counter pick is usually made by a player who is already losing the match, often on a hero they don't main, and a single matchup is a small slice of a ten-player game. That drags famous hard counters below 50% win rate and can invert the truth. Duel data measures the fight itself, so it survives those biases.
