D.Mon after the buff: the two hardest counters in Overwatch right now

|Overwatch

Two heroes are doing something to D.Mon that nothing in Overwatch is doing to anyone else right now.

Torbjörn rates +39.5 against her. Illari rates +33.7. Those are the two highest counter scores in our entire Overwatch 5V5 table, and it is not close. The highest matchup that does not involve D.Mon at all is Mauga into Wrecking Ball at +22.0, and 99% of the 2,756 matchups we track sit below 11.2. Every number here is as of August 24, 2026.

The caveat is simple. We have three weeks of D.Mon data and the third has barely started. Everything below describes her after the buff, because that is when our measurement window opens. None of it is a verdict.

What the number actually measures

Counter score is not a win rate. It is duel-share points above expectation, so zero means the matchup goes exactly as both heroes' general form predicts. A hero who is strong everywhere gets no credit for being strong here. Positive means the matchup goes better than that hero's own record elsewhere says it should.

That distinction matters for Torbjörn. His teams normally lose the death trade, winning 45.4% of the deaths in fights he is present for across every other opponent. Against D.Mon that jumps to 65.4%, on roughly 24,900 tracked deaths. Illari moves from 48.0% to 64.5%. Those are not small edges that squeaked past a threshold.

A week ago both numbers rested on half as much data. The sample has since doubled and the effect grew rather than faded, which is the opposite of what a new-hero mirage does.

I checked whether this was a quirk of those two heroes rather than something about D.Mon, and it is not. Torbjörn's next best matchup against anyone else in the game is +10.7. Illari's is +8.4, into Torbjörn of all people. Both are roughly four times better into D.Mon than into their own second best target. The same pair tops the 6V6 table too, which is a separate pool of matches, with Illari at +38.8 and Torbjörn at +36.0.

It is team pressure, not the duel

We store the two halves of a counter score separately, and the split here is lopsided. Of Torbjörn's +39.5, only +11.6 comes from winning the one on one kill trade. The other +27.9 comes from his side winning the fights D.Mon is in. Illari is starker still, at +2.6 from the duel and +31.1 from team pressure, and her duel half is small enough to be indistinguishable from noise.

Neither of them is beating D.Mon by out-shooting her. They are making the space she wants to hold expensive to hold. Playing into either one, expect to feel fine in the individual fight and lose the fight happening around it.

If you are the other tank, it is simpler

Tank mirrors are the cleanest part of this data and they say something intuitive. D.Va (+13.2) and Mauga (+10.4) counter her properly, and they do it in opposite ways. Almost all of D.Va's edge is team pressure, while Mauga's is mostly the duel. Ramattra (+4.9), Orisa (+2.0) and Roadhog (+1.8) are mildly ahead.

It runs the other way into dive. D.Mon is favoured into Winston (+7.1), Wrecking Ball (+6.5), Domina (+3.9), Hazard (+3.4), Sigma (+3.3) and Zarya (+2.4). If your instinct is to dive a D.Mon, the numbers say bring something else.

Outside the tank slot her best targets are Mercy (+12.0), Anran (+9.7), Brigitte (+9.1), Kiriko (+7.8), Venture (+7.0) and Lifeweaver (+6.9). Mercy is worth reading closely, because none of that score comes from D.Mon killing her. Their duel half is exactly zero. What moves is everything around it, with Mercy's team losing 64.9% of the deaths in fights D.Mon is present for against 54.0% everywhere else. The full list in both directions is on her counters page.

Her matchups barely move by rank, and one division proves it

This is the part I expected to go the other way. Read the per-rank scores straight off the table and Torbjörn sits at +46.3 in Silver, +44.6 in Gold, +45.5 in Platinum and +45.4 in Diamond, then collapses to +3.7 in Emerald. Illari does the same thing, holding in the mid thirties everywhere and landing at -1.3 in Emerald. So does D.Va, at -11.5.

Three unrelated heroes cratering in exactly one division is not three coincidences. So I went to the raw death shares underneath those scores, and they are flat. Torbjörn's Emerald share is 63.0%, against 67.0% in Silver, 64.6% in Gold, 65.0% in Platinum and 64.1% in Diamond. Every one of those sits inside the others' confidence intervals. Tested directly, Gold against Emerald comes out at z=1.3, which is nothing.

What broke in Emerald is the baseline the score is measured against, not the matchup being measured. That is the honest limitation of a derived number three weeks into a hero's life, and it is worth saying plainly rather than shipping a rank story that does not exist. Test all five rated divisions together, Silver through Diamond, and Torbjörn, Illari, D.Va and Mauga all pass a homogeneity check, though Torbjörn now sits close enough to the line to keep an eye on.

Above Diamond I still cannot tell you much. Master carries real data, Grandmaster covers only 31 of her 52 matchups on a few thousand deaths, and Champion has none at all. Treat those divisions as unmeasured rather than neutral.

Map type moves her, though less than it looked

Blizzard publishes her win rate map by map, so there is little point repeating it. Rolling those maps up by mode is where something appears, and almost nobody does that by hand.

ModeD.Mon win rateEdge over other tanks
Control55.6%+5.9
Flashpoint55.1%+5.6
Push53.9%+4.1
Hybrid53.3%+3.4
Escort53.2%+3.2

Grouped, that is 55.5% on the point capture modes against 53.3% on the linear payload ones, a gap of 2.3 points that clears significance comfortably. The second column is the more useful one. Every other tank pooled together sits between 49.6% and 50.0% no matter which mode you pick, so the mode barely moves the role. D.Mon's advantage nearly doubles between Escort and Control.

Her strongest maps are the point capture ones, led by Aatlis at 57.9% and Antarctic Peninsula at 57.3%, and her weakest is Circuit Royal at 50.8%. It fits how her kit is classified. We weight her as a rush hero, and rush wants the close quarters brawl a contested point produces, not the long approaches on Circuit Royal or Dorado.

One correction to make against my own instinct here. A 2.4 point spread across modes sounds like a lot until you rank it, and D.Mon comes tenth of fifteen tanks. Junker Queen, Winston and Sigma all swing roughly twice as hard. The mode preference is real and it replicates, but it is an ordinary amount of mode preference for a tank, and individual map numbers still carry error bars of two to four points. The map stats are there if you want to dig.

Who to play alongside her

Synergy is measured the same way, as lift over what a pair should manage on their own strength. Zenyatta comes out best at 1.4 points above expected, then Sombra at 1.3, Tracer at 1.1 and Pharah at 1.0.

The bottom of that list is the interesting bit. Mercy is her worst partner at 1.7 points below expected, which makes Mercy the only hero on this page that is both the target D.Mon most outperforms and the ally who costs her most. Lifeweaver, Lúcio and Illari follow. Two of those four are the passive, position anchored supports, which is a coherent enough shape to be worth watching. Her duo numbers cover the rest.

Treat all of this as provisional

Three weeks is three weeks. New heroes distort things by being new. The people playing D.Mon right now chose to, the people facing her mostly have not learned the matchup, and both of those wash out over the next month.

Torbjörn and Illari are still the numbers I most expect to soften, not because they look fake, since they have now survived two rounds of checking a week apart and grew in between, but because a counter score near +40 has never held its level anywhere else in this table. What I am watching is whether the team pressure half stays dominant once people stop dying to a hero they have not fought before. If it holds, she has a real structural weakness. If it collapses into the duel half, this was a learning curve.

All of it refreshes daily, so D.Mon's hero page and the Overwatch counters index will be ahead of this article by the time you read it. The Counterwatch app calls the same matchups during hero select, which is the moment any of this is worth knowing.
