Features & Stats
How are the session and match grades calculated?
Both sessions and matches use the same 5 letter grades: A, B, C, D, F.
<br />Session grades (based on win rate):
| Grade | Threshold |
|---|---|
| A | 70%+ win rate |
| B | 55%+ win rate |
| C | 45%+ win rate |
| D | 35%+ win rate |
| F | Below 35% win rate |
Match hero grades (based on a score comparing performance to averages):
| Grade | Score threshold |
|---|---|
| A | +20 or above |
| B | +5 to +19 |
| C | -5 to +4 |
| D | -20 to -6 |
| F | Below -20 |
The score represents how much a player's hero stats deviate (as a percentage) from their personal averages.
What are sessions and how do they work?
A session is a group of matches played in a row. Counterwatch automatically groups your matches into sessions based on play time — if there's a gap of 3 hours or more between matches, a new session starts.
Each session tracks your wins, losses, draws, and gives you a session grade based on your win rate:
| Grade | Win Rate |
|---|---|
| A | 70%+ |
| B | 55%+ |
| C | 45%+ |
| D | 35%+ |
| F | Below 35% |
Sessions also show which heroes you played, how long you played each, and your overall performance at a glance.
What stats does Counterwatch track?
Counterwatch tracks detailed stats for every match you play:
Per hero, per match:
- Kills, Deaths, Assists
- Damage dealt, Healing done, Damage mitigated
- All stats also calculated as per 10 minutes rates for fair comparison across different match lengths
- Time played on each hero
Per match:
- Map, game mode, and match outcome
- Your rank and average match rank (in competitive)
- Team compositions and player information
Aggregated:
- Win rates and trends over time
- Hero-specific performance grades comparing each match to your personal averages
- Session grades based on win rate
What are Community Stats?
Community Stats show you how every hero is performing based on real match data from Counterwatch users. The data is filtered to your rank division, so you see what works at your skill level rather than global averages.
What's included:
- Hero Win Rates — How well each hero performs overall and on specific maps
- Counter Matchups — Which heroes have the best win rate against a specific hero
- Synergy Pairings — Which heroes work best together with a specific hero
- Per-Map Breakdowns — How heroes perform on individual maps
Where to find it:
- Heroes page — Browse hero win rates, counters, and synergies
- Maps page — See community hero performance per map alongside your personal stats
Community Stats update weekly and require enough matches at your division to be statistically meaningful.
How do the counter and synergy tier lists work?
When you click on a hero in the Heroes page, you'll see Counter and Synergy tier lists. These show how well other heroes perform against or alongside the selected hero, based on community win rate data at your rank division.
Tier Breakdown
| Tier | Win Rate | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| S | 55%+ | Dominant |
| A | 52–55% | Strong |
| B | 50–52% | Slightly favorable |
| C | 48–50% | Slightly unfavorable |
| D | 45–48% | Weak |
| F | Below 45% | Very weak |
Heroes are sorted by win rate within each tier (best first) and grouped by role.
Counter vs. Synergy
- Counters show which heroes have the best win rate against the selected hero — useful for knowing who to pick into an enemy hero
- Synergies show which heroes win the most alongside the selected hero — useful for coordinating with your team
If you have personal matchup data, hovering over a hero portrait will also show your own win rate against or with that hero.
Data Quality Indicators
Not all matchup data is equally reliable. At very high or very low ranks, some hero matchups may have very few games played, making the win rates less trustworthy.
Counterwatch shows you how confident the data is for each hero:
- Full opacity — High or moderate confidence (200+ matches). The win rate is reliable.
- Dimmed (faded) — Low confidence (50–200 matches). Take the win rate with a grain of salt.
- Dimmed with dashed border — Very low confidence (fewer than 50 matches). The win rate may be misleading.
Hover over any hero portrait to see the exact match count and a colored confidence indicator in the tooltip.
What is the Hero Pool?
The Hero Pool lets you pick your preferred heroes for each role. During matches, Counterwatch scores your pool based on the current match context and shows you which of your heroes would perform best.
How to set it up:
- Open the Hero Pool card on your home dashboard
- Click the + button next to a role (Tank, DPS, Support)
- Select the heroes you play for that role
- Repeat for each role
How scoring works during matches:
Your hero pool is scored based on three factors:
- Counter matchups — How well each hero performs against the enemy team
- Team synergy — How well each hero pairs with your teammates
- Map performance — How each hero performs on the current map
The scores update as new heroes are picked on both teams.
Smart suggestions:
Counterwatch may suggest heroes to add or remove from your pool based on your play history. You can dismiss suggestions you don't agree with.
What does the Match Lineup show?
The Match Lineup is an in-game overlay widget that breaks down how each hero pick in the match is affecting both teams. It helps you understand at a glance whether your team composition has an advantage.
What it shows:
- Per-hero scores — Each hero has a score based on their counter matchups, synergy with teammates, and map performance
- Win chance estimate — A prediction of which team has the composition advantage
- Hero pool suggestions — Your top-scoring heroes from your hero pool, so you can see which swaps might help
When it appears:
The lineup is available during hero select and in-match. During hero select, scores are based on map performance while teams are still forming. Once heroes are picked, the full counter and synergy data is factored in.
All stats are based on Community Stats data at your rank division.
What do the scores on the Maps page mean?
The Maps page shows every map in the game with two sets of data side by side:
Your personal stats (left side):
- Your win rate and number of matches on each map
- Your top heroes by win rate on that map
Community stats (right side):
- The top-performing heroes at your rank division on each map
- A popularity bar showing how often each map appears relative to others
All maps are listed whether you've played them or not. Maps you haven't played yet still show community data, so you can get a sense of which heroes work well before you even queue.
The highlight cards at the top show your best and worst maps (based on 5 or more matches) and the most popular map at your rank.
What is Match Intel?
Match Intel gives you live information about the players in your match during hero select and in-game.
For each player, you can see:
- Their most-played heroes and win rates
- Their experience level and rank
- How they perform on the current map
- Scoreboard stats during the match
This helps you understand your teammates' and opponents' strengths so you can make better hero picks and strategic decisions.
Match Intel requires a free account to access player profile data.
How do I customize my in-game overlay?
Counterwatch includes a drag-and-drop overlay editor that lets you customize exactly what you see during a match.
To open the editor:
- Click the Overlay Editor button in the top toolbar
- Drag widgets to reposition them on your screen
- Resize widgets by dragging their edges
- Adjust opacity with the slider on each widget
Available widgets:
- Hero Change Feed — tracks hero swaps in real-time
- Players Window — team and enemy profile info
- Match Roster — health, ult charge, and hero info for all players
- Win Chance — predicted match outcome
- Map Performance — your hero performance on the current map
- Match Lineup — compact hero lineup display
The editor supports different scenes (hero select, in-character, scoreboard), so your layout can change depending on what's happening in the game. You can also choose from different aspect ratio presets (16:9, 16:10, 21:9).
What hotkeys does Counterwatch use?
Counterwatch uses a few hotkeys you can customize:
- F1 — Toggle the in-game overlay on or off
- Alt+P — Open the session popout window
You can change these hotkeys in Settings → Hotkeys. If a hotkey conflicts with another app or the game, you can rebind it from there.
How does Discord Rich Presence work?
When enabled, Counterwatch shows your current game and hero in your Discord status — so your friends can see what you're playing.
To toggle this:
- Go to Settings → App Behavior
- Toggle Discord status on or off
When enabled, your Discord profile will display that you're playing via Counterwatch along with your current hero.
Data & Sync
What data gets synced to the cloud?
When you're signed in, the following data syncs automatically:
- Match history and results
- Hero playtime for each match
- Player information from your matches
- Banned hero data
- Your feed and notifications
- Support tickets
Some data syncs for everyone (including guests):
- Season information
- News and announcements
- Events
- Articles
- FAQ content
What do the different sync icons mean?
Icons, explained:
| Icon | Status | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Animated cloud | Syncing | Your data is being uploaded or downloaded |
| Green checkmark | Synced | All your data is backed up to the cloud |
| Yellow spinning | Retrying | A network error occurred; the app is trying again |
| Gray cloud | Paused | Sync is temporarily paused (during updates or session refresh) |
| Red icon | Error | Something went wrong—see the error message |
| Gray cloud | Disabled | Sync is not available |
| Cloud-off icon | Waiting | Sign in to enable cloud sync |
Can I force a sync?
Yes. Click the sync status indicator in the toolbar. If it shows "Synced," clicking it will trigger a fresh sync to make sure everything is up to date.
Why does it say "Syncing" for a long time?
If you have many matches to sync (especially after playing offline), it may take up to an hour. The app syncs in the background so you can keep using it normally.
Why does sync keep retrying?
This usually means a temporary network issue. The app will keep trying automatically. If it continues for more than a few minutes:
- Check your internet connection
- See if Counterwatch servers are having issues (check our Discord)
- Try signing out and back in
What does "X matches not yet synced" mean?
This shows how many of your local matches haven't been uploaded to the cloud yet. Once sync completes, this number will reach zero.
What features work when I'm offline?
Counterwatch uses a local-first design, so most features work without an internet connection:
Available offline:
- View your complete match history
- Browse hero statistics and session data
- Access saved player profiles
- Review all in-game data from past matches
Requires internet:
- Signing in or creating an account
- Syncing new matches to the cloud
- Linking your Overwolf account
- Verifying subscription status
How do I know if I'm offline?
When you lose your internet connection, a banner appears at the top of the app saying "You're offline - Some features are unavailable until you reconnect." Buttons that require internet (like Sign In) will be disabled with a tooltip explaining why.
Will I lose my match data if I lose connection after a match?
No. All your matches are saved locally on your computer first. When you reconnect to the internet, your data automatically syncs to the cloud. You won't lose any matches or stats.
The app says I'm offline but I have internet. What should I do?
- Check if other apps can access the internet
- Try closing and reopening Counterwatch
- Check if your firewall is blocking the app
- Restart your computer
- Open a support ticket or ask for help on Discord if the problem persists
What happens to my data when I come back online?
When connectivity returns, Counterwatch automatically:
- Detects the connection is restored
- Resumes syncing your match data to the cloud
- Downloads any updates (like new season info or announcements)
- Updates your subscription status if you're signed in
This happens in the background—you don't need to do anything.

What is the difference between a Counterwatch Account and an Overwolf Account?
What's the difference between my Counterwatch account and my Overwolf account?
- Counterwatch account: Your email/password for the app. This stores your match history and settings in the cloud.

The overlay isn't showing during my game
If the in-game overlay isn't appearing:
- Check that the overlay is enabled — if it's disabled, you'll see a banner in Counterwatch with an "Enable" button. Click it, then restart your game.
- Try Borderless Windowed mode — the overlay works best in Borderless Windowed. Exclusive Fullscreen may prevent it from appearing.
- Restart the game — after enabling the overlay or changing window mode, a game restart is required.
If you still don't see the overlay after these steps, try enabling it manually: Overwolf Settings → Overlay & Hotkeys → find your game → enable the toggle.
